Toremar is the trading name of Toscana Regionale Marittima S.p.A., founded in 1976 and headquartered in Livorno. Acquired by Moby S.p.A. in 2011, Toremar is the lifeline carrier between the Tuscan mainland and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago — Elba, Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa, Giglio and Giannutri. The company traces its operating heritage to Navigazione Toscana, which connected Piombino and Portoferraio from 1914.
The fleet includes seven Ro-Pax ferries serving the lifeline Piombino-Elba route and connections to Capraia, Giglio and Giannutri, plus one hydrofoil for fast Piombino-Portoferraio crossings. Toremar became known in 2015 as the world's first SmartFerry company, introducing free Wi-Fi and onboard multimedia totems through a partnership with the RCS group. This applies to the larger ferries on the Elba route. Onboard, most ferries offer a self-service cafeteria, indoor seating with airline-style seats, an open deck and toilets. The hydrofoil is a foot-passenger-only fast service.
Toremar tickets purchased through SimpleFerry are issued as PDF e-tickets. Boarding typically closes 45 minutes before sailing. Vehicles are charged separately and need to arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before boarding closes. Foot passengers can board up to 30 minutes before departure. Children under 3 travel free; children under 11 receive a 50% discount.
Small pets travel free in carriers. Larger pets need a leash and muzzle and travel on the open deck. Pet documentation is needed on all crossings.
